Analysis of Web3 Data Breach Incidents and Protective Measures

In recent years, with the development of internet technology, individuals and businesses have faced an increasing number of cybersecurity threats. The Web3 ecosystem is particularly susceptible to attacks, facing both smart contract vulnerabilities and traditional cyber attacks.

An analysis of 74 Web3 security incidents shows that approximately 31% of the incidents resulted in retrievable data loss. This data is often sold on the dark web or hacker forums, posing a long-term risk to victims. Particularly, such incidents have significantly increased after 2019.

Leaked data usually appears in the following channels:

1. Dark web (.onion) website and Telegram channel
2. Hacker forums, such as Raid forums, Breach forums, etc.
3. Dark Web Market

Although law enforcement agencies have intensified their crackdown, a large amount of data is still circulating. Among the 23 incidents where data may be retrievable, 10 incidents of (43%) data are still being sold on the dark web market.

Compared to pure financial losses, the risks brought about by data breaches are more long-term and difficult to quantify. Especially when it involves the leakage of customer personal information, it may lead to victims facing long-term fraud risks.

To reduce the risk of data breaches, users can take the following measures:

1. Limit the use of centralized services to reduce data exposure.
2. Enable Two-Factor Authentication
3. Change exposed information such as email and phone number if necessary.
4. Use self-custody wallets and hardware wallets to diversify assets
5. Avoid using duplicate passwords
6. Regularly check data breach monitoring websites
7. Use credit monitoring services to prevent identity theft

In conclusion, although security vulnerabilities cannot be completely avoided, taking appropriate measures can effectively reduce risks and protect personal data and asset security.
